My First Week of Nursing Informatics

My first week of Informatics took a lot of getting used to because of the late start. I had to get used to the forums we use to upload assignments and turn in my assignments on time. Thankfully the first lecture helped me get an understanding of our first topic Nursing Informatics. According to Lee Andrea, “Nursing Informatics is a specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data information, knowledge,and wisdom in nursing practice” (Lee, 2014, para 1). With this information I was able to understand that nursing informatics assists nurses and health care providers give appropriate and effective care to their patients through the use of technology. We also learned that nursing informatics helps the following:

• Analyze clinical and financial data

• Promote and facilitate access to resources and references

• Provide nursing content to standardized languages

• Improve relationships between providers and recipients of health care

• Enable cost savings and productivity goals. 

After reading these points I came to understand that  by using technology the nurses would be able to gather information on the patient's previous visit to the hospital thus making the process quicker. Also having access to the patient's health record you can easily see the patient's medical history including their allergies , their names  , their emergency contacts etc . This reduces medical errors and helps the nurses successfully coordinate their patients' health care.
