Lessons Learned

This part of the blog would contain all the information  I learned about Nursing Informatics in semester 3.

Unit 1

  • Introduction to Nursing Informatics

  • Computer: Hardware & Software

  • Input and Output

For this unit, I learned what Nursing Informatics is and the benefits that come with it. Nursing Informatics is a field of nursing that integrates nursing, computer technology and information sciences to strengthen and improve medical data and operations to support the practice of nursing and to enhance patient care (RN.org 2020). In addition to nursing informatics, I learnt about the computer's hardware and software. Computer hardware refers to the physical components that make up the computer system such as the monitor and keyboard whereas the software is a bunch of programs that allow a computer to perform a specific task such as antiviruses and systems backup. Input devices are used to digitize and input data into the computer such as scanning devices and microphones. Output devices are any hardware factors that convey information from a computer to many people. Examples are printers and monitors.

Unit 2

  • Computer Networks

  • Internet

  • Connectivity

  • Professional Networking

For this unit, we learned all about using networks professionally. I also learnt that communication devices are hardware eligible for delivering items from computers and devices to transmission outlets and vice versa. I also learnt that a network is a compilation of computers and devices combined together, often wireless, through communications devices. Connectivity allows computers to send and receive data from other technological devices such as laptops, tablets etc.

Unit 3

  • EHR-The new healthcare paradigm

  • Nursing Documentation and EHR

  • Consumer and EHR

EHR also known as Electronic health record is a digital version of a patient's medical chart. I learned that the EHR makes it easier for nurses to document their patient’s data. There is no need for much paperwork because everything is available and the click of a button. The consumers also benefit from the EHR because it allows the nurses and other medical practitioners to properly and efficiently take care of them.

Unit 4

  • Healthcare Information Systems

  • HIS elements and subsystems

  • HIS benefits and challenges

A health information system (HIS) is a system that captures, stores, transmits and manages health data. HIS consists of six key components :

  1. Resources

  2. Indicators

  3. Data sources

  4. Data management

  5. Information products

  6. Dissemination and use (Levin 2019)

I also learned some benefits of HIS, which are data analytics, collaborative care, cost control and population health management (Brook 2020)

Unit 5

  • Telehealth and eHealth

I learned that telehealth and eHealth are very important during this COVID-19 pandemic. Telehealth is the delivery of health care, health education, and health information services via technology (Catalyst 2018)
