Nursing Informatics In My Future
As a Nursing student doing Nursing Informatics I got to see the importance of technology in the medical field. In this blog post, I would: identify the benefits of Health IT in the nursing profession, address the challenges and questions that pertain to Health IT and lastly, I would state what I would be able to contribute to help the situations.
The Benefits of Information Technology in the Nursing Profession
The nursing profession benefits massively from information technology and I intend to also in the future. The following are some benefits of Information Technology in nursing:
Increases Patient Safety - Nurses or any other medical practitioners that use Electronic Health Records have improved patient’s safety significantly. Using EHR they are able to analyze and record data accurately.
Improves Scheduling - With the use of technology, nurses can now manage the abundance of patients by giving them specific days to come in avoiding “traffic” in the process.
Reduces Test and Procedure Redundancy- EHR simplifies patient data by eradicating repetitive testings and procedures while decreasing disturbances, drawbacks, medical expenses and risks of creating a bigger problem.
Creates Efficient Care Coordination - EHR makes it easier to access patients data. This helps reduce medical errors, such as giving a patient medication that later causes an allergic reaction.
Gives Faster Lab Results- EHR allows nurses to retrieve patients’ test results and other personal information faster than the conventional method which is going to the labs by foot.
Reduces Hospital Stays - With everything running more efficiently with less medical errors being made, patients are able to leave the hospitals at a quicker rate. This helps nurses and other healthcare practitioners create more room for patients outside of the hospital that are injured or ill. (Regis College 2020)
The Challenges and Inquisitions that arises with the use of Health IT
There are three main challenges and inquisitions still current in the world related to Health IT and they are:
Information stored on Cloud Might Show Vulnerability/ Are the Systems Protected Enough Against Breaches? - I believe in order to make sure that the patient’s privacy is not invaded by skilled hackers, the hospitals need to heighten their security.
Viruses and Malware Still Infect Computer Systems/ Just Like a Regular Device, Could Medical Systems Also be Attacked by Viruses? - A rush to document patient records in the system leaves gaps in security leaving room for viruses to step in. In the future, I would take my time adding patients data to the medical system. A little extra time could save you from a bigger catastrophe.
Passwords Aren’t Protected/ Would a Problem Arise if There is One Password for Many Devices known to Hundreds of Healthcare Workers? - I believe the best solution is to create specific groups for specific medical technology systems. This way it lessens the number of people having the same passwords and makes it easier to identify persons who might create a breach. (UIC 2020)
